Hi! My name is Symantha my story starts 40 years ago. I had a traumatic birth injury, I was born with Erb’s Palsy, where my left shoulder and arm were twisted and caught in the birth canal during the birth process. The Doctor used forceps to help pull me out, in doing so, I had no oxygen to my brain for 5 minutes, broke my left clavicle bone, severed a nerve down my left arm, which caused damage to my left arm, wrist and hand. As I grew up, I had limited use of my arm but was able to play sports in school and become a florist & balloon decorator (for 10 years) despite all the Doctors that told my mom she was pipe dreaming that there was no way I would be able to use my left hand like everyone else.
In March 2004, I had a month of unexplainable pain in my left shoulder and clavicle. I woke up one April morning and could not lift my Left arm. My arm just hung there, I struggled with my appearance as my hand crunched/curled up, as I could not control or move my fingers. I could no longer cut my own food; tie my own shoes, button or zip anything, dressing myself took me forever. Typing skills were gone. There were so many things in my life I suddenly could no longer do. I never expected to loose everything I had worked so hard for in my life. I was no longer able to arrange flowers or tie a balloon. My career was over.
For a year, I struggled both physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. I was in severe pain all the time. When the weather got colder the pain intensified. I cried myself asleep many nights. I tried just about everything alternative – chiropractic, acupuncture, acupressure, body re-posturing, massage, physical therapy of all kinds, pain patches, oils, healing prayer and more. Nothing seemed to help. The Doctors collectively could not figure out why this happened as I kept getting more and more motion and was getting stronger the more I used my arm. In the summer of 2003, I was able to put my hair up in a bun for the first time all by myself which was huge for me being a woman and then I was left hopeless in 2004, a 33 year old single woman feeling completely useless and emotionally devastated and lost as I could no longer see how I could contribute or make a difference in the world.
It was not until 2005 a year later, when I stumbled upon Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I was claustrophobic and terrified when I saw the enclosed Chamber for the first time. But, there was a little small voice inside me that told me I needed to do this therapy. I had 1 session. It was only 50 minutes, and in that session my joints in my left hand felt looser. Over the course of the next 5 days after my session, I was able to open and close my fingers without having to pry them open with my other hand. The pain had diminished during those days after my session. I went back and continued sessions, and by week 3 was able to pick up and put back down and actually let go of what I was holding in my hand without help. I was so excited to be able to pick up and set down tiny pieces of paper, coins, open & close a bottle of water. Hold the steering wheel, use the turn signal and drive a car again without severe pain. I was a walking miracle. Anyone around me knew of the healing God gave to me. I did have a relapse and go back to 3 weeks of severe pain as my clavicle was healing from one of my sessions, but after those 3 weeks of pain, the pain has NEVER come back. I got my life back, through Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy. I had about 45 Mild Hyperbaric sessions in a 6 month time period. I took a 2 year break as the Hyperbaric center I went to closed. Now I own a Hyperbaric Chamber and go in about once every two weeks, not because of my arm but for general maintenance as it makes me feel good. Symantha I. Vietz
